In December 2022, the United Nations passed a resolution formally recognising the power of sport to expand sustainable development and inspire young people around the planet. Passed via consensus of the UN General Assembly, it was tabled in the aftermath of the Secretary-General’s report entitled ‘Sport: Catalyst for a Better, Stronger Recovery’ – to which Laureus Sport for Good was proud to contribute.<\/p>\n

    About Incubation Hub<\/b><\/p>\n

    Many Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) lack the necessary skills and resources to be fully compliant in terms of formal management and governance structures, which ultimately affects their eligibility for funding, and the ability to deliver their programmes effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

    To address this gap, Laureus SA and Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) collaborated to create the Incubation Hub – a supportive environment designed to provide NPOs with the relevant training, support and mentorship, with modules including:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    • Child Protection and Safeguarding<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Employment Law<\/span><\/li>\n

      NPOs who graduate from the Incubation Hub become more desirable to funders and are in a stronger position to scale their impact.<\/span><\/p>\n

      After successfully launching in the Eastern Cape in 2022, the 2nd Incubation Hub rolled out in 2023 with continued Eastern Cape-based support by MBSA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      This year, Laureus SA expanded on the Incubation Hub\u2019s existing impact by branching out to Stellenbosch, with further roll-outs of this successful programme to the rest of South Africa planned in the near future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Thanks to funding made available by the Department of Arts, Culture and Sport, Laureus SA coordinated and delivered a series of holiday programmes that helped us strengthen the work of the programmes within our network.<\/p>\n

      Through a collaborative approach with other organisations, participating youth could be a part of a range of activities, including snorkelling to horseback riding to cricket coaching.<\/p>\n

      Wayde van Niekerk Inspires Youth of 9Miles Project<\/b><\/p>\n

      Sprinting sensation, Olympian and Laureus Ambassador, Wayde van Niekerk, visited the young participants of the 9Miles Project in Cape Town – his first Programme visit in his capacity as Ambassador.<\/span><\/p>\n

      As an added treat to the young fans, he was accompanied by his sister, SA hockey player, Kalya Swart.<\/span><\/p>\n

      After participating in a drumming circle, touring the facility, and learning about the impact of 9Miles on the local youth, Wayde chatted to the kids about resilience in the face of adversity.<\/span><\/p>\n

      It is visits such as these that show South Africa\u2019s youth that there are local and relatable role models they can look up to and draw inspiration from.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Breaking Barriers Through International Connections<\/b><\/p>\n

      Figure skaters from Figure Skating in Harlem (FSH) in the USA embarked on a life-changing trip to South Africa, organized by FSH in conjunction with Fight With Insight, the 9Miles Project and Laureus SA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      In addition to learning new sports and leadership skills as they taught skating to girls in South Africa who had never tried the sport, the girls from Figure Skating in Harlem had an opportunity to engrain themselves in their South African peers\u2019 culture, and discover a little more about themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Originally planned for 2020, the trip went on hold while the world paused during the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, in 2023, everything aligned and FSH got the green light.<\/span><\/p>\n

      The main mission of the trip was for the girls of FSH to act as international ambassadors for the sport and bring skating to a continent where it\u2019s not as well-known. The Laureus team connected the group with 9Miles and Fight With Insight, two organizations with similar missions to FSH using very different sports. Together, these groups organized an 11-day trip, matching each of the girls with a peer to make a new friend and learn from each other\u2019s culture.<\/span><\/p>\n

      After meeting their peer matches, the group was whisked away for an adventure in Cape Town and Johannesburg. They visited historical and geographic landmarks, and their peers invited them into their homes, where they experienced their way of life.<\/span><\/p>\n
