SPORTS FOR GOOD
GLOBAL SUMMIT

Laureus Sport for Good Global Summit 2023: Celebrating a World of Good

Laureus Sport for Good SA recently had the opportunity to attend the Laureus Sport for Good Global Summit – the largest gathering of Sport for Good stakeholders in the world.

We were joined by 17 local Sport for Development organisations, six staff members and two corporate partners, and we were solidly  invested in the best practice exchange over the three days at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Summit was hosted Kely Nascimento, new Laureus Ambassador, social campaigner, and the daughter of Brazilian football legend Pelé, one of the original members of the Laureus World Sports Academy and recipient of the inaugural Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award.

DELI2SEA

Deli2Sea Run

Capetonians were invited to add purpose to their steps, and gather for a unique and vibrant celebration of ocean conservation in the third annual Deli2Sea, where participants could run, walk or wiggle their way from Chardonnay Deli in Constantia to Dalebrook Beach.

This non-timed event offered a day of passion, fun and purpose, where participants could share their commitment to saving our oceans.

CHARITY BALL

Annual Charity Ball Raises R1-mil

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation (LSG) received a significant financial boost at its annual fundraiser on 19 August.

The LSG charity ball was held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, supported by Carrol Boyes, and in partnership with Cape Grace Hotel. Some 330 guests were in attendance, and collectively raised R1-million for the ongoing work done by the Foundation to support over 25 Sport for Social Development programmes across the country.

JP MORGAN
CORPORATE
CHALLENGE

JP Morgan Challenge – Celebrating 10 Years of Collaboration

The J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge, SA’s largest after-work corporate road race, took place in Johannesburg with a capacity crowd of 14,000 runners, which included Laureus Ambassadors and Trustees.

This was the 10th year that  Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is the official beneficiary of the event, which saw J.P. Morgan employees, Laureus Ambassadors and the thousands of individuals representing corporate South Africa line up to participate in a 5.6km road race.

Funding from partners like the one with the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge is pooled with other resources and ultimately invested into Laureus-funded programmes to further our Sport for Development mission.

GOLF
FOR GOOD

Golfing for a Cause

Over the course of 2023, almost 200 golfers participated in the popular Golf for Good golf days across the country –  taking place at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club’s East Championship Course, and Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course respectively.

As always, our Laureus Golf for Good events were generously supported, and collectively raised approx. R500,000  in the process!

The funds raised at these golf days help us continue our support to the Sport for Development programmes in our care, thereby ensuring the continued sustainability of our efforts to uplift the youth through the power of sport.

E-PRIX

Going Green with E-Prix

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation had the unique privilege of sending some 230 kids from 9Miles Project, CoolPlay and Great Commission United to Green Point in February, where they were hosted as special guests during the pre-race activities ahead of the  inaugural ABB Formula E Cape Town E-Prix.

This visit included a pit lane walk to meet the E-Prix race drivers – including SA’s very own Kelvin van der Linde – and a fun afternoon in the Allianz Fan Village where they could test their driving skills on the racing simulators on display.

In addition, 9 Laureus YES participants / graduates were selected to act as Grid Ambassadors on Race Day.

WOMAN’S
MONTH

Women’s Month Breakfasts

The ever-popular annual Women’s Month breakfasts at the Maslow Time Square in Pretoria and the Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town offered an opportunity to connect, inspire and be inspired.

MC’ed by MC Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp, these breakfasts offered something meaningful to everyone in attendance: Mayur (Miles) Bhana reminded us to keep dreaming, while we were inspired by Adéle Niemand’s message of bravery.

In Johannesburg, Laureus-supported Programme Altus Sport shared more about the work they do in the communities, while breakfast attendees in Cape Town heard from Zip Zap Circus School and School of Hard Knocks SA.

Special thanks to everyone who made these mornings possible including Sun International, FNB Women’s Business Desk, ESSE skincare and Carrol Boyes Functional Art, as well as Laureus Ambassadors Dumisani Chauke and Amanda Dlamini (JHB), Deshun Deysel Bester, Natalie du Toit and Babalwa Latsha (CT) and Laureus Deputy Chair Ntambi Ravele for always being so willing to give your time for Sport for Good.

KLAPMUTS SPORTS FOR PEACE
RUN/WALK

Sport For Peace 5km Walk/Run

The tragic passing of Klapmuts football hero Oshwin Andries in February motivated a number of sports and socially conscious organisations to organise a 5km Peace Walk/Run to shine a spotlight on peace and encourage tolerance.

Hosted at Klapmuts Primary, the event was organised through a collaboration by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation SA, Stellenbosch Academy of Sport, Stellenbosch Football Club, Remgro, Sports Science Institute of South Africa and Klapmuts Primary.

Exposing young learners to the enjoyment of participation in sport – and the values inherent in sport – can put them on a trajectory of success and away from the senseless acts of violence so prevalent in our communities.

CAPE TOWN
CYCLE TOUR

Pedalling for Good with the Cape Town Cycle Tour

The Cape Town Cycle Tour continues to be a popular platform for Laureus Sport for Good Foundation fundraising, and to connect with the Foundation’s many supporters. This year was no different, and Race Weekend was jam-packed with Laureus activities.

A pre-race cycle along the Atlantic Seaboard, led by Laureus Ambassador Grant Lottering, got the day started on an active note. The 25 cyclists then joined 50 Laureus guests at The Cape Grace Hotel for breakfast, with delegates including Laureus Ambassadors, Trustees, the Premier of the Western Cape, Mayor and MEC of Cultural affairs and Sport, as well as partners (Mercedes-Benz, Carrol Boyes, Veldskoen, Laurium Capital, Sun International), Laureus supporters and YES Alumni.

On Sunday morning, a Laureus peleton of 20 cyclists joined tens of thousands of participants to ride the iconic Cape Town Cycle Tour.

We can’t think of a better way to celebrate almost 20 years of collaboration with the Cape Town Cycle Tour!

YPO
FAMILY DAY

YPO Family day

25 Families from within the YPO network, joined Laureus for a family day at Val de Vie.  Laureus programmes: CoolPlay, Sustainable Institute and Anton Buntu Foundation, led the programme activations for the morning.  Guests enjoyed a picnic lunch and engaged with Elana Meyer and Ryk Neethling, who were part of a Q&A.  Jill Benting proudly represented the Laureus YES Programme by giving guest an overview of the programme and the impact it has on our Youth.  Guests were encouraged to purchase selected items from Sportsman’s Warehouse – where a substantial amount or equipment was donated to the programmes who assisted us on the day.
